Prana: life force, Yama: extend.
Pranayama is the practice of breath expansion. It is one of the eight limbs of classical yoga as defined by Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. Pranayama helps to regulate the body’s nervous system and is a helpful precursor to meditation. Through pranayama, the parasympathetic nervous system is activated to help calm the body, which in turn promotes physical and mental ease and reduces stress. In addition, it often awakens a sense of spirituality.
This particular pranayama practice is based on Dr. Vasant Lad’s Ayurvedic series of seven breathing exercises. Since the breath work is done in a seated position all that is needed is a yoga mat or blanket to sit on and comfortable attire. The class will take place outside and masks will be removed once seated in a social distanced arrangement. All Covid-19 precautions and regulations will be required.
Use your class pass or a free session with your gym or yoga membership. Sign up on the Mindbody app or here.
